Reasons for Imperialism
For years America followed a policy of isolationism. However, many developments fed the nation's ambition for overseas expansion. One reason why America decided to take part in international affairs was that other powerful nations were growing in power as they expanded. The other countries gained influences in more areas while America did not grow due to its policy of isolationism.
The cartoon shows a young boy representing America on one side of the world, and other kids on the other side having fun. A boy representing Great Britain is seen happily enjoying a lollipop, representing a piece of Africa. A kid representing the Netherlands is seen playing with a plushie representing a part of the Dutch Indies. Another kid, representing Portugal, is seen enjoying a ride on a ship headed south towards Africa. The last kid, representing France, is frolicking with a pinwheel towards Africa. Like all kids, the American boy is jealous of the other kids having fun with things he doesnt have. He feels a sense of jealousy and he wants to have fun with imperialism as well.
